5/27/08 CHASE SUMMARY

On this day, it looked like storms were going to fire in the SE panhandle. I got my gear together and headed down 287 towards Childress. I sat at the McDonald's in Childress eating burgers :-) and watching radar. Some convection popped up to my south, so I headed down US83 towards the community of Paducah. This convection was mostly just elevated junk that had no organization to it at all. I played with the rain core a little and noticed stronger convection west of Dickens. I headed towards Dickens via US83 to Guthrie and then west towards Dickens. As I got about 15 miles from Dickens, I started seeing a well developed shelf cloud. Hey, it wasn't a bell shaped updraft, but a shelf cloud would do for me. I stopped along the highway and began taking photos of the shelf cloud. After about an hour of staying ahead of it, I slowly made my way home through the heavy rain and weakening storm. Photos of the day are below:
